Target Chinese looks back on the 10 Internet buzzwords of 2016.

1蓝瘦香菇(lán shòu xiāng gū) Skinny blue mushroom

今年10月,广西南宁一位小哥在失恋后录了一段视频:“难受,想哭。。。。。。你为什么要说这种话?”由于带有浓厚的当地口音,“难受,想哭” 听上去成了“蓝瘦,香菇”。此后,“蓝瘦香菇”的表情包就在网上扩散开来。

This phrase sprouted up across the internet in October when a video of a man confessing his loneliness after a breakup went viral. “Nanshou xiangku (I can’t take it, I want to cry)” he can be heard saying in the video. But because of his thick southern accent, his lament came out sounding like, “lanshou xianggu (skinny blue mushroom).” The internet rejoiced and the meme was born.

Example

2吃瓜群众(chī guā qún zhòng) Melon-eating masses

这个词语的完整版为“不明真相的吃瓜群众”。这个词语来源说法很多,有一种说源于一个公路新闻,记者采访一个老伯时,老伯说我什么也不知道,我当时在吃西瓜。后来新闻评论里就有人评论到:我只是一个不明真相的吃瓜群众。网民们经常使用这个词语,有时候是带有贬义地比喻被动围观重大事件的旁观者。

The origin of the phrase is debated. But some agree this meme can be traced back to a news report that included a street interview of an old man. When asked what happened, the man said he didn’t know – because he was busy eating watermelon. When the story was posted online, netizens posted comments about the man – “the melon-eating masses who don’t know what’s really going on.” The term became popular to describe passive and often clueless people.

Example

3洪荒之力(hóng huāng zhī lì) Prehistoric powers

2016年8月8日(北京时间),在里约奥运会女子100米仰泳半决赛中,中国选手傅园慧晋级决赛,她接受媒体采访时说:“我已经用了洪荒之力了!”“洪荒之力”一夜走红,多用来形容超乎想象的巨大能量。

When Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui was told she had qualified for the finals at the Rio Olympic Games during a TV interview, her surprised response was gold. “I have used all my prehistoric powers to swim!” The animated Fu at once became an instant Internet celebrity and the inventor of a new meme that describes an unstoppable force.

4小目标(xiǎo mù biāo) Small target

中国首富王健林在一次电视采访中给出年轻人如何致富的建议。他说,“先定一个能达到的小目标,比方说,我先挣它一个亿!” 自那以后,这个词语常被用来讽刺一个不太可能实现的目标。

“First set yourself a small target, for example, I first targeted to earn 100 million yuan!” was the advice China’s wealthiest man, Wang Jianlin, gave during a TV interview on how to get rich. But Wang’s “small target” received a wealth of sarcastic comments online, with many laughing at their own prospects of earning that much in a lifetime. It is now often used sarcastically to refer to an impossible goal.

Example

The origin of the phrase is debated. But some agree the term’s origin story comes from a viral post describing a doomed conversation between a couple. The girlfriend poses a crafty question designed to catch her boyfriend off guard. The term originally translates to a set of moves in martial arts or a well-worn method, but now refers as a way to trick or trap someone.

她是怎么识破他的套路的?

6葛优躺(gě yōu tǎng) Ge You slouch

今年7月,一组“葛优躺”表情包开始出现在网络上。其图片源自曾经热播的大型家庭情景剧《我爱我家》,葛优饰演的主人公像一摊烂泥瘫坐在沙发上,神态“妙趣横生”。网民们便把极其懒散的瘫坐姿势称作“葛优躺”。

This meme involves an image Ge You, the A-list actor and native Beijinger, from his early days starring in one of China’s earliest TV sitcoms I Love My Family《我爱我家》.  A disheveled and slackerish Ge appears slouched on a sofa and staring into space. The comic pic was quickly dubbed the “Ge You slouch” on social media.

Example

“Friendships are like little boats, they flip easily.” The phrase originally comes from a series of viral comics on Sina Weibo showing penguins in boats that mocks the fragility of relationships. The meme refers to how little spats over little infractions as posting an unwanted selfie can result in getting instantly ‘defriended’. A number of variants on the phrase have appeared over the year.

Example

yǒuyì de xiǎochuán shuōfān jiùfān ,àiqíng de jùlún shuōchén jiùchén.

友谊的小船说翻就翻,爱情的巨轮说沉就沉。

8一言不合就 XX(yī yán bú hé jiù XX) the slighest disagreements lead to…

“一言不合就XX”,这个词语来源不明,其中一个说法和2015年末举行的世界电子竞技大赛有关,这次大赛主办方的办赛态度引起观众的强烈不满。一些网民便在其百度贴吧中贴出低俗内容以表示愤怒。于是有人评论道:“现在的年轻人,一言不合就开车。” 随着使用的泛化,“一言不合”和后面的XX失去了语义上的逻辑联系,仅仅表示“突然”“任性”“动不动”的意思。

The origin of the phrase is debated. But most agree that it started on Tieba, Baidu’s online forums, and involved posting vulgar content in reply to a post. There are many variants of the meme, often used to describe a negative outcome in a humorous way.

Example

xiànzài de nián qīng rén ,yīyán búhé jiù kāi chē.

现在的年轻人,一言不合就开车。

9老司机 (lǎo sī jī)  Old veteran

有一种说法指出老司机出自云南山歌《老司机带带我》。“老司机”可以指在某些方面熟门熟路,资历较老,见识广,经验足的人。通常这个词伴随着惊叹与崇敬之意。在游戏、贴吧、论坛等各种网络社区中待得久,资历老的用户会被称为老司机。

This word is used to describe someone with lots of experience in any field. Some believe the phrase comes from the song Old driver please take me 《老司机带带我》 a popular song in Southwest China. Netizens use the word to describe veteran gamers, forum moderators or other long standing members of an online community.

10辣眼睛 (là yǎn jīng)  It’s blinding me!

该词出自网络剧《屌丝男士》的剧情台词。多用于形容看到不该看、不好看的东西。是个讽刺性用语,当然讽刺的程度要视上下文环境而定,在开玩笑和骂人中都经常出现“辣眼睛”一词,要理解该词,必须结合具体语境。

This sarcastic phrase, taken straight from TV show Diors Man《屌丝男士》, is used to describe things that should not be seen or things that are just unpleasant to look at. It’s often used as a comical insult that all depends on context.
