Lyloo Shen, founder of Whatschinese, graduated from Shanghai International Studies University with a Masters in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (to Spanish-speakers) in 2011. She taught Chinese for two years in Spain (at the Confucius Institute of Las Palmas University and at a high school in Valencia), and while abroad she saw firsthand the many problems faced by students studying Chinese as well as their curiosity about modern China. When she returned to China, she abandoned her stable job at an IT consulting firm and began recruiting professional Chinese teachers from varied backgrounds in order to create the Chinese language-learning site www.whatschinese.com.
